Strengthening Strategic Cooperation for a Sustainable Maritime Future
🤝 Bilateral Talks in Oslo
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met Japan’s Vice Minister Terada Yoshimichi in Oslo to explore joint maritime projects. Discussions focused on sustainable technologies, green shipping, shipbuilding collaboration, and port digitisation.

- Collaboration in shipbuilding and maritime training
- Deployment of green port and smart island initiatives
- Opportunities for Japanese investment in Indian ports
- Strengthening maritime R&D and seafarer upskilling
🌏 Smart Islands Development
Plans were discussed to transform Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands into smart, resilient regions with Japan’s help in deploying renewable energy and digital infrastructure.
🔧 Industry & Shipbuilding Collaboration
India invited leading Japanese firms like Imabari Shipbuilding, JMUC, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to explore partnerships. Greenfield investments and joint shipyard ventures were positively discussed.
👨🏫 Upskilling and Maritime Training
With over 154,000 trained seafarers, India proposed structured training programmes and employment collaboration with Japanese maritime companies to bolster global workforce readiness.
🏛 Maritime Heritage Collaboration
India proposed Japan’s partnership in developing the National Maritime Heritage Museum in Gujarat as a global centre for education, tourism, and maritime research.
🗓 Looking Ahead
Shri Sonowal invited Japan’s participation at India Maritime Week 2025, scheduled in Mumbai from 27–31 October 2025. It will serve as a global platform for dialogue, investment, and innovation in maritime development.
🇮🇳 A Shared Vision
The meeting reaffirmed both nations' commitment to deepen maritime ties rooted in mutual trust, sustainability, and regional stability, aligned with India’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
