NHRC India: A Call for Justice

Eradicating Manual Cleaning of Hazardous Waste, Upholding Human Dignity

Immediate Implementation of Supreme Court Directives

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) urges all states and union territories to act swiftly on the Supreme Court’s 14 directives issued in Dr. Balram Singh v/s Union of India (2023). These directives target the outlawing of the dangerous and degrading manual cleaning of hazardous waste and sewer systems, protecting basic human rights and dignity.

NHRC's Key Recommendations

  • Widely disseminate the prohibition of manual scavenging to local authorities, contractors, and public.
  • Conduct sensitization programs highlighting legal and human rights perspectives for officials and workers.
  • Develop and deploy real-time robust monitoring systems to ensure compliance and act as deterrents.
  • Institute regular review and follow-up mechanisms to track progress and ensure accountability at all levels.

Your Role: Act Now!

The NHRC mandates an action taken report from authorities within eight weeks. It is crucial that every stakeholder participates actively to abolish this cruel practice and uphold equal rights for all.
