📉 Overview

Coal imports in India dropped by 9.2% this fiscal year from April 2024 to February 2025, totaling 220.3 million tonnes compared to 242.6 million tonnes in the same period last year.

💰 Foreign exchange savings of approx. $6.93 billion (₹53137.82 crore) achieved due to import reduction.

⚙️ Sector Breakdown & Key Insights

The Non-Regulated Sector (excluding power) saw a significant 15.3% import drop. Coal-based power generation rose 2.87%, but thermal power plant imports for blending declined sharply by 38.8%.

🛠️ Government Initiatives

Major initiatives driving domestic coal production:

  • Commercial Coal Mining
  • Mission Coking Coal

These strategies contributed to a 5.45% increase in domestic coal output during the same period.

🌱 Vision for Self-Reliance

India’s coal sector supports key industries such as power, steel, and cement. Despite challenges in meeting demand for coking and high-grade thermal coal, focused efforts aim to reduce import dependence.

The Ministry of Coal emphasizes sustainable domestic production aligned with the national goal of Viksit Bharat — a self-reliant, energy-secure India supporting robust economic growth.
