Ayurveda Day to Be Celebrated on 23rd September Every Year
A New Date for Ayurveda Day
In a landmark decision aimed at enhancing global visibility and consistency in observance, the Government of India has designated 23rd September as the official date to celebrate Ayurveda Day annually. This decisive change, notified through a Gazette on 23rd March 2025, replaces the previous tradition of celebrating Ayurveda Day on Dhanteras which follows a lunar calendar resulting in a variable date every year.
The Essence of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is recognized as a scientific, evidence-based, and holistic system of medicine focusing on preventive healthcare and wellness. This observance invites individuals to embrace Ayurveda’s timeless principles and its pivotal role in maintaining a balanced lifestyle through natural harmony of the mind, body, and spirit.
Symbolism Behind September 23rd
The selection of 23rd September coincides with the autumnal equinox, representing cosmic balance—the equal presence of day and night. This day poignantly embodies the Ayurvedic philosophy of equilibrium between internal and external environments, reaffirming Ayurveda's essential message of living in harmony with nature.
A Call for Participation
The Ministry of Ayush encourages all individuals, health professionals, academic bodies, and international partners to unite in observing Ayurveda Day on its new date. This shift aims to further embed Ayurveda centrally in global health narratives, enhancing its recognition as a sustainable, preventive healthcare system for wellbeing worldwide.
